Barn

By Ben Greenman.
Two sisters. Two marriages. But in a small town, your past never really goes away. Sometimes, it even comes and lives out in the barn. Read the full story.

Part One

She's older. That's the first thing you need to know about her. I'm pregnant. That's the first thing you need to know about me....   Read More >>

Part Two

Here's what you need to know. Two sisters. The first, our narrator, is pregnant and married to a farmer named Berne. The second, Sarah, has remarried after the death of her first husband, a hardware store owner named Ed. The first sister worked in the store as a teenager, before Ed became her brother-in-law, and had a fling with Ed's teenage son from his first marriage, Dave. On to part two...   Read More >>

Part Three

So here's what we learned yesterday. Our narrator, who once fooled around with Dave, invited him to stay in her barn. Dave's been broken up since his dad, Ed, died. But Ed died, he was also married to our narrator's sister, Sarah. Dave was Ed's son from a previous marriage. Turns out they didn't get along so well. Our narrator's husband, Berne, doesn't know the complicated backstory either; she eased her guilt about the ex- in the barn by telling him she'd have their child. Now you're ready for part three...   Read More >>

Part Four

Well. I didn't think Berne would actually hit his wife, whose name we now know is Sue. But he was never happy when Dave moved into the barn when he needed a place to stay -- turned out he knew all along that there was once something between his wife and the new boarder. But the nice note Dave left when he departed -- and the scarf that Berne found when he went to the barn himself -- pushed him to violence. But wait, how did Sue's scarf get to the barn, anyway?   Read More >>

Part Five

Well, then. Turns out Sue's sister, Sarah, was fooling around with Dave, her late husband's son from another marriage, who had a previous fling with Sue. The heart wants what the heart wants, indeed. Let's see how Sue's husband, Berne, handles this, after he struck his pregnant wife thinking she was the one sleeping with Dave.   Read More >>
