Ann Packer is the author of the new novel "Songs Without Words" (Knopf), from which "Liz & Lauren" is an excerpt.

Her previous novel, "The Dive from Clausen's Pier," was a national best seller, received the Great Lakes Book Award and the Kate Chopin Literary Award, and has been translated into 10 languges.
