Sherman, Rachel

Rachel Sherman is the author of the novel “Living Room” and the story collection “The First Hurt” (both Open City).

In its review of “Living Room,” the New York Times noted that: “With perfect pacing, Sherman rotates the action among Abby, her mother and her grandmother, emphasizing the loneliness and secrecy that pervades three generations of women, as well as the fear that a revelation of secrets will make their spaces more cramped and uncomfortable, less suitable for living.”

The Believer called “The First Hurt” a “startling debut collection” and Time Out New York praised its “laser-cut narratives.” It was shortlisted for The Story Prize and the Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award, and named one of the 25 Books to Remember in 2006 by the New York Public Library.

Her stories have appeared in McSweeney’s, Open City, n+1, Conjunctions, Story Quarterly, Post Road and many other publications.

Sherman earned her M.F.A. from Columbia University, and teaches writing at Columbia and Rutgers. She lives in Brooklyn.
